When you're not sure which way to turn

bible verse about following God deuteronomy 13:4
Serve only the LORD your God and fear him alone. Obey his commands, listen to his voice, and cling to him. Deuteronomy 13:4 (NLT)

“Turn left in 70 metres.”

“At the round about take the third exit.”

My husband and I have been following Charles, the British GPS voice, wherever he tells us to go for the last few days.

We’ve been driving round tiny one-way roads in Madrid and Lisbon. And somehow finding our way, thanks to Charles.

Most of the time, I don’t have a clue where the GPS is taking me but I trust it will get me to my destination.

Yesterday while listening to Charles tell us where to go I had this thought that maybe God wants me to follow him as blindly as I follow the GPS.

I think it would be easier to do this if I knew God was a little voice that came out the dashboard and told me to, “drive on the highlighted route.”

It gets a little more complicated when I’m not always sure which way God wants me to turn.

I can’t just turn the volume up to hear God’s voice. (tweet this)

I find God speaks quietly; mostly I hear God when I lean in.

following God picture quoteSome times God’s direction feels more like a tap on the shoulder, than a voice telling me where to go. (tweet this)

And I’m talking about the kind of tap where I turn around and can’t see anyone there who could have touched me.

I don’t know about you but often I get anxious about where God is taking me, and I start asking questions about where the destination is and how much longer it will take.

I realised as I drove that maybe instead of worrying so much about working out where God is directing me I should rather just trust God to guide me one turn at a time.

Almost all of the time I can’t see the route God has mapped out for me but I’m learning to trust that he will help me find my way on unfamiliar roads.

Ponder: Do you ever wish God’s voice was more audible? Do you think that would help you to obey it?

Pray: Lord, draw me closer to you so I can hear your direction.
