How Not To Be Afraid

The fear of the Lord leads to life; then one rests content, untouched by trouble. Proverbs 19:23 (NIV)

I WOKE UP from a deep sleep to heavy breathing outside my window.

There had to be bad man standing outside waiting to hurt me or my family.

I could hear my heart beating. Fear and adrenalin were running hand-in-hand through my veins.

I took a quick peek to see what I was dealing with.

And saw the biggest nose.

As my eyes began to adjust to the darkness I noticed that the criminal had beautiful eye lashes - eye lashes like a dairy cow.

I pulled the curtain back further and saw I was afraid of a cow.

And I didn’t feel afraid anymore, just silly.

When you are afraid of something it’s like putting your hands up and saying, “I give up, you’re in charge here fear, do whatever you like.”

Which is pretty silly given the things we’re often scared of (like dairy cows).
Fear has power over us because we allow it to.

When we become subject to our fears, and allow fear to be the boss (and boss us around), we often allow our fear to determine the outcome.

And like taking orders from a dairy cow, fear doesn’t always tell us to do the wisest things.

Fear can cause us to stay where we are when moving on would be better for us or fear can make us keep quiet when Gods prodding us to speak words that would bring life.

Solomon (just the wisest man that ever lived) wrote, that the fear of the Lord leads to life and that there one rests content, untouched by trouble.

This makes sense when we understand that whatever we fear controls our lives, thoughts and actions.

If we don’t want to be afraid, and we want to lead satisfied lives and not let trouble phase us, then we have to learn to fear God more than our fear.

When we fear God we allow him to be in control.

And I don’t know about you but I would much rather have God in control than a dairy cow.

Do you think God is greater than your biggest fear? What will it take to allow God to have control rather than fear in your life?
